Dear Supporters:
We are very pleased to let you know that our effort to keep Chinese-processed chicken out of school meals has made a significant leap forward this week.
The omnibus appropriations bill negotiated by both parties in Congress this week now includes a provision which would bar the federal funding of any poultry processed in China for use in the National School Lunch Program or any other federal child nutrition program. The specific text of the bill reads as follows:
SEC. 736. None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to procure processed poultry products imported into the United States from the People’s Republic of China for use in the school lunch program under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1751 et seq.), the Child and Adult Food Care Program under section 17 of such Act (42 U.S.C. 1766), the Summer Food Service Program for Children under section 13 of such Act (42 U.S.C. 1761), or the school breakfast program under the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (4223 U.S.C. 1771 et seq.).
We will let you know if the final appropriations bill, once signed into law by the President, contains this language. In the meantime, however, we wanted to let you know that your signature on our Change.org petition played a significant role in getting this language into the bill.
Thank you for your continued support!
