Congress: Investigate the Harm to U.S. Citizens From the GOP’s Immigrant Benefit Crackdown
The Issue
President Trump and House Republicans are pushing a sweeping crackdown on access to public benefits for immigrant families — including those with U.S. citizen children and lawfully present immigrants.
This goes far beyond undocumented individuals.
A new tax bill and a series of agency actions are aiming to
- Cut off food stamps, tax credits, Medicaid, and tuition aid for millions
- Deny benefits to refugees, asylees, and DACA recipients
- Penalize entire households for having one undocumented member
- Force U.S. citizen children into poverty, homelessness, and hunger
Experts warn this campaign will hurt the very people it claims to protect: U.S.-born children, who are US citizens and legal residents.
Nearly 1 in 8 U.S. children lives in a household with at least one noncitizen parent.
We call on Congress to launch an independent investigation into the real-life impact GOP actions have on U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants; the long-term social and economic consequences of these rollbacks and whether any of these changes violate constitutional or civil rights protections.
This is not about protecting taxpayers — it’s about scapegoating immigrants at the expense of American children.
