Today, lawmakers are meeting to vote on the American Health Care Act of 2017. This bill is important for everyone, whether you get insurance through the Marketplace, your employer, or Medicaid. Here are four things you should know about the bill: • The bill guts protections for pre-existing conditions. Plans will not have to cover basic services, even prescription drugs that people need to treat their conditions to stay healthy. • Protections against annual and lifetime limits are effectively obliterated by eliminating Essential Health Benefits requirements (these are services insurers must cover). Because annual and lifetime limit protections apply only to essential health benefits, insurers could once again cap how much they are willing to pay in a year or a lifetime for each enrollee. • 150 million Americans with employer-based coverage are now at risk of cuts to care with the new changes in the bill. People who get insurance through their jobs will once again face annual and lifetime caps if the House bill moves forward. • Access to mental health care and opioid use treatment will be dramatically limited due to Medicaid cuts and changes to health insurance rules, even with a last-minute infusion of woefully inadequate funding in the bill. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE NOW. Ask them---How will they vote? Urge them to vote NO. We need every Representative to tell us their vote. The House had vowed to vote TODAY, so we CANNOT wait. We know that calling works. Here are the numbers to use to call your representative: English: 866-426-2631 Spanish: 877-736-7831
