Confront Disinformation Across The Philippines

The Issue

My struggle incessantly remains pertinent, as someone who lives in a digital era overshadowed by the phrase "fake news". This isn't merely about me, many Filipinos struggle to separate fact from fiction and/or fake news in our country's chaotic information meta.

The pressing issue of disinformation is not just confounding; it is threatening our democratic process, where informed decision-making is deeply affected, especially now that the election is near, people tend to believe manipulative historical stories circulating in the internet, leading to intricate decisions that could affect our country in the long run.

In a nation like the Philippines, with its 73 million internet users,(as cited by Statista, 2020) the ramifications of unchecked spread of disinformation are vast. According to a study published by Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report (2018), the Philippines tops the list of countries likely to fall for fake news. This situation is critical, whether it's for a citizen trying to make sense of the daily news or a student trying to research for their project.

We urge the Philippine government to establish stringent regulations to combat the proliferation of "Fake News". We demand mandatory media literacy lessons integrated into the educational curriculum, thus empowering our future generation, educating them to discern the legitimacy of the information they encounter.

Let's stand against disinformation. Let's arm our society with the truth, foster an environment of transparency, and ensure the preservation of our democracy. Please sign this petition and lend your voice to this vital cause.
