Option to indicate pronouns on student accounts
The Issue
We are a group of students in an Intro to Women’s and Gender Studies class this semester at Concordia College. For a class project, we were asked to think about what we believed needed to be addressed relating to gender on campus. That being said, our goal is to give students the option to list their preferred gender pronouns on their student accounts at Concordia. Student’s gender pronouns would then be made available to campus staff, such as professors, academic advisors, and counsellors. Currently, pronouns are generally assumed on campus until an individual indicates otherwise, requiring a student to have a potentially uncomfortable conversation in which they may feel singled out and/or they have to educate others. This gender pronoun identification would be completely optional for students to select, as we recognize that some individuals may prefer not to indicate their personal pronouns. As students currently at Concordia College, we feel like open discussions about gender pronouns are used in small groups and organizations, but not in large classrooms settings, a place in which an individual’s gender pronouns should be recognized. As a campus, we want to continue to grow and work towards creating a better community for all students by using their correct gender pronouns.
