The Issue

The animals are being mistreated on a nightly basis. Neighbors near by can hear the cows & calfskin scream @ night. The air quality is so pour due to dust in the high wind region with no vegetation growing on 160 acres of agricultural land. Also, it has drastically reduced housing prices and has been accused of land snatching.

“We are fourth-generation producers who take pride in the operation, the health of our animals and our treatment of the environment. Several protocols and employee training programs are in place to ensure the animals are properly handled and cared for. Through our cooperative, Dairy Farmers of America, we participate in its Gold Standard Dairy Program. It is the first program of its kind in our industry and provides an on-farm evaluation to assess animal care and wellness, environmental stewardship, employee training and milk safety and quality. The Gold Standard Dairy program also incorporates the National Milk Producers Federation’s Farm Assuring Responsible Management Program (FARM). The FARM program, in which Smith Valley Dairy is enrolled, sets industry-wide guidelines for animal care and wellness best practices. In addition, it offers third-party audits, which ensure compliance with those practices. As farmers, we are dedicated stewards of the land. Like all dairies in the country, we must abide by all laws and regulations pertaining to dairy farming and the use of water and air. We have worked hard to balance these regulations with community concerns. In an effort to be good neighbors in the Smith Valley area, we have taken steps to prevent disruption to the community. These steps include minimizing the brightness of our facility’s lights and working with environmental engineers to determine best practices for waste disposal.
