The Issue

Why This Petition Matters
Toronto is facing an undeniable crisis—homelessness among youth is at an all-time high. Every night, young people in our city are forced to sleep on the streets, exposed to violence, exploitation, and life-threatening conditions. We have the power to change that.

The City of Toronto has proposed a youth shelter at 1615 Dufferin Street to provide a safe space, essential resources, and a path to stability for young people in need. However, this life-saving initiative is under attack. A petition against the shelter is using misinformation, fear, and discriminatory arguments to try to block it. We cannot let this happen.

The Opposition is Based on Fear, Not Facts
Opponents claim that a shelter will increase crime, harm local schools, and disrupt the community. This is not true. Research and experience from cities worldwide show that shelters reduce crime by giving people the support they need to survive and thrive. Shelters do not harm neighborhoods—they strengthen them by fostering inclusivity, safety, and compassion.

Let’s be clear: homeless youth are not criminals. They are victims of systemic failure, family breakdown, and economic hardship. Turning our backs on them is not an option.

What We Demand
1️⃣ Move forward immediately with the youth shelter at 1615 Dufferin Street. Delay means more young lives at risk.

2️⃣ Reject fear-driven opposition that stigmatizes homeless youth. Shelters are a solution, not a problem.

3️⃣ Demand that Toronto prioritize real solutions to homelessness. Housing is a human right.

Join the Fight for Justice
A city that turns away its most vulnerable is a city that has failed. But we have the power to stand up, speak out, and demand better. We refuse to let fear dictate policy. We choose compassion, action, and justice.

We must stand up for what is right. The youth shelter at 1615 Dufferin St is essential because:

✅ It provides a safe place for youth in need – Many unhoused young people are escaping family violence, abuse, or systemic failures. They deserve shelter, not rejection.

✅ It does NOT increase crime – Research shows that shelters do not cause crime; instead, they help prevent it by providing stability and resources to vulnerable individuals.

✅ It does NOT harm the community – Some argue that shelters should not be near schools and daycares, but unhoused youth are not criminals. They need support, education, and a chance to rebuild their lives.

✅ It aligns with Toronto’s commitment to fighting homelessness – The city has a responsibility to provide shelter and resources for all its residents, especially those who need the most.

Sign this petition today and help make Toronto a city that protects all its residents—not just the privileged few.
