Late Friday, the Pennsylvania legislature passed HB 2468 by wide margins and today Governor Wolf signed it into law. The new law will require that the Lower Merion School District seek approval from the Orphan’s Court before taking Stoneleigh by eminent domain. They’d have to prove to the Court that there is no “reasonable and prudent alternative” site for a sports complex and/or school. Throughout the legislative process, you made your voices heard. Thousands of you sent emails and made phone calls. The votes in both the House and Senate were overwhelmingly supportive and bipartisan. And it all happened with extraordinary speed. This represents a remarkable expression of support for conservation and for the common-sense notion that, once land is preserved, it should stay that way. This extraordinary legislative success is a result of the leadership and determination of our champions in the House and Senate—Representatives Warren Kampf, Kate Harper, and Marcy Toepel, and Senator Bob Mensch—and a host of bipartisan House cosponsors, including local Representatives Tim Briggs, Mary Jo Daley, and Greg Vitali. They, and every member of the legislature who voted for HB 2468, has our sincere gratitude. As we celebrate this moment, a sobering reality remains. While the law places an additional obstacle in the School District’s way, the threat to Stoneleigh has not gone away. In the end, the only sure way to save Stoneleigh is for the Lower Merion School District to take Stoneleigh—all of Stoneleigh—off the table. For good. We cannot let up!
