Combat Antisemitism - Demand UOttawa Remove Their Students’ Union’s Antisemitic Statements
The Issue
Help Combat Antisemitism:
The students at the University of Ottawa are demanding the removal of both the "Statement on Israel-Palestine" and the Union's position on its "Solidarity with Palestine" with immediate effect due to their antisemitic nature and inappropriate use of withheld information, including but not limited to, the issues of Palestinian childrens’ antisemitic indoctrination, involuntary child soldier training and recruitment into terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
The Union’s statements are not only unacademic, lacking sources and references, but they also intentionally disinform and withhold information from their audience. The statements clearly breach both the University’s and The Students’ Union’s codes of conduct, clearly outlined on its constitution and policies.
The impact these statements have had on Jewish students like myself is profound. For instance, a fellow female Jewish student confided in me about her discomfort in openly wearing her Star of David necklace on campus, as well as another student having removed the mezuzah from their front door.
Antisemitism is not just an issue at our university; it's widespread across Canada. According to Combat Antisemitism Movement (01.25.2024), anti-Jewish hate crimes are up 211% since the Oct 7 pogrom.
This situation has poisoned our social lives and has created an unhealthy academic environment for us. By allowing these antisemitic statements to be supported and presented publicly by the Students’ Union, it sends out a message that our university supports antisemitism.
We demand immediate action from both The University of Ottawa’s administration and The Student's Union to remove these two antisemitic statements. We urge them to uphold their commitment towards creating an inclusive learning environment free from discrimination for all students no matter their religion or ethnicity.
Please sign this petition if you stand against discrimination and believe in creating a safe academic space for all students at the University of Ottawa.
