Columbia charge an exorbitant amount for a college experience, not merely zoom calls. Because frankly, that’s all we’re getting at this moment from the university. Not to mention the fact there’s only pass/fail to strive for.
While appreciating how busy the likes of PresBo must be, I believe this needs to be given serious consideration in due course. Do sports fans pay the same to watch their team play behind closed doors? No, they instead pay whatever TV/Subscription costs are. There is such thing as an overall experience, the intangibles. This has been drastically diminished for a student population of which so many live in campus housing.
My fraternity offered prorated fees, the government is out there providing massive stimulus packages. This is to say, it is possible to acknowledge these are not normal times, and to act as such. It goes without saying how students have suffered from this. To charge the same fees regardless is to me thus backward and criminal. Please give time to consider, and act in a laudatory manner that others will look up to, as I know big organisations, for example football clubs in England, have done already.
