The Issue

Colt’s Law: The Pool Barrier Protection Act is named in honor of Colt Walker Catalina, a cherished young soul who tragically drowned on March 21, 2010, while under the care of a relative. This tragedy underscores a devastating reality – one that propels us to urgently address a vital safety measure needed in households across Texas.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death among children aged 1–4. In particular, home swimming pools pose an extraordinary risk, claiming countless lives annually in heartbreaking, yet preventable, incidents.

Installing pool fences has proven to significantly decrease the risk of drowning by acting as a barrier between young children and potential danger. Pool fences are a practical and crucial solution, preventing accidents and saving young lives.

By mandating the installation of pool fences around residential swimming pools, Texas would take a definitive step towards protecting our children and ensuring a safer environment for families. With the rise in residential swimming pools, this law is more pertinent than ever.

Join this crucial campaign for Colt and for every child vulnerable to such tragedies. Your signature will bring us one step closer to enacting Colt’s Law, reducing these unnecessary risks. Sign and share this petition to demand that pool fences become a required safety standard across Texas.
