It's been asked since this petition was created. Why does the Broadmoor need to own the land -- especially given their claims of limited land use and public access? Why can't they leave the public in control of the use of OUR land and apply for a lease and let the City use the lease revenue to make improvements/build trails and keep this historic parkland protected in public ownership. Unless there is more intended use planned which would make the need for ownership more understandable - to be able to more freely develop the land as any private land owner would want and has the right to do, we cannot figure out why there is a need to own the land for a building envelop of purportedly only 4.5 acres (we have nothing detailed in writing...there are no real estate memorandums or site plans to give us a thorough view). Below is a link to an article which looks at Anschutz's involvement in and ownership of Colorado Springs. He casts a mighty shadow in little light.
Though the public was promised release of the appraisals, the City changed their mind and denied 3 Open Records requests. Attorney Bill Louis filed an Open Records lawsuit challenging the City's denial to disclose to the public. Here is an article which sheds some light on why the public is so interested in reviewing the instructions, assumptions and methodology of the appraisals. http://www.csindy.com/coloradosprings/land-parcels-included-in-the-strawberry-fields-deal/Content?oid=3762571
Of note, a parking lot at the base of parkland is valued at over $1,000,000 per acre. Additionally, the appraised value reported for Strawberry Fields is the only parcel coming in under Assessor values by about $600,000. An 8.5 acre parcel with a view of the Drake power plant and abutting a busy road is worth almost the same as the stunningly beautiful and wild 189 acres of iconic Cheyenne Canon Park known as Strawberry Fields.
