In November, 2017 El Paso County voters approved ballot measures 1A and 5B with the understanding that taxpayer money would be put toward a 3rd lane on “The Gap”, an 18 mile stretch of I-25 between Monument, CO and Castle Rock, CO. The ballot measures did not explain that the 3rd lane would be required to be a toll/express lane. We do not support the current Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) plan for this stretch of roadway and insist that CDOT terminate the current plan, as it has very little public support. We ask them to start again, with a plan for 4 lanes in each direction and secure the funding in the state budget for those lanes to be free of tolls.

CDOT’s current Plan for “The Gap”- https://www.codot.gov/projects/i-25-south-monument-castle-rock-ea

Key points:

- Our Governor and state leadership must provide CDOT the funds to expand this gap of I-25 to 4 lanes in each direction. That is the safest and most forward-thinking plan for this dangerous roadway, that has not been expanded in 60 years.

- Our population is growing and we understand that in 9 years, we will need a 4th lane. Put it in NOW and SAVE the taxpayers the money and the hassle of congestion and construction continuing to plague the area.

- We know Colorado is experiencing record revenues at this time. Colorado Springs is the second largest city in Colorado. The State needs to prioritize the budget to widen the gap to 4 lanes in each direction, with no tolls, and without raising taxes.
