College Students Refusing to live at home? Then must live ON-CAMPUS for better supervision
The Issue
For the past four years, my life has been increasingly disrupted by the behaviour of a college student living in the condominium above mine. This student, who receives financial assistance in the form of scholarships or grants, has been a constant source of distress rather than just a neighbour. It began with loud stomping, which gradually morphed into what sounds like heavy objects or furniture being dropped or thrown onto the floor. The impact is so intense that it resonates into my ceiling, and it has made restful sleep a rarity for me, leaving me with constant palpitations and a pervasive fear for my health. This situation has stripped the joy from my life.
This experience has led me to firmly believe that students who refuse to live with parents/guardians and receive financial aid in the form of scholarships or grants should be required to live in on-campus housing with proper supervision. The independence of living off campus often lacks the necessary oversight to address inappropriate behavior. Universities and colleges need to acknowledge the impact scholarship students can have on those around them, especially when their behavior goes unchecked.
Statistically, colleges are increasingly populated with students living off campus, many of whom receive financial aid. Research indicates that young adults often still require guidance and structure to ensure they develop into responsible members of society. On-campus living provides a balanced environment with residential advisors and policies that can support this development while mitigating negative behaviors.
Requiring students who refuse to live at home with parents/guardians to reside on campus could also relieve neighboring communities like mine from suffering due to the disruptive behavior of unsupervised students. It is essential for educational institutions to uphold their responsibility towards not only the students but also towards the communities surrounding them.
I urge you to consider this petition to ensure that universities implement policies requiring financial aid recipients (who refuse to live at home with parents/guardians) to live on-campus, fostering better supervision and oversight. This could significantly enhance the quality of life for many community members while promoting a healthier, more focused environment for students.
