The issue relevant to this petition continues to be Justice Thomas's failure to recuse himself voting in a ruling that directly concerned whether his spouse's communications with Mark Meadows, referenced in this article, should be turned over to a Congressional committee. When originally invited to appear before the committee, Mrs. Thomas was quoted as saying she was eager to appear and "clear up misconceptions." Her attorney now says otherwise.
Of course, she has the right not to appear. And, if she should at any point be subpoenaed, she has her 5th Amendment rights. And, again, she has her 1st Amendment rights to be politically active, within the limits of the law.
Her spouse, at the same time, had an obligation to recuse himself from ruling on any matters so directly involving her. He failed to do so, and the potential for the appearance of a conflict of interest is clear to any reasonable person--as he had every ability to discern.
Holy Cross should therefore rescind his honorary degree; he no longer deserves it.
