The Issue

We urge the UK Government to close the £100 million funding gap needed to complete the full refurbishment of the Lancaster West Estate - a commitment made after the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017. The Lancaster West Estate includes and surrounds Grenfell Tower.

Why is this important?

Lancaster West is home to 2,500 residents. Since the Grenfell tragedy, residents have worked closely for many years with ministers, civil servants, and the council to co-design a model, 21st-century refurbishment for the entire estate.

More than £150 million has already been secured from various sources. However, without the remaining funding from central government - as promised - large parts of the estate risk being left behind.

This would break promises made to residents, undermine years of trust and resident-led co-design, and result in stark inequality for a community already profoundly affected by Grenfell.

Why is it urgent to act now?

Without confirmation of full funding, the agreed programme cannot be delivered in full. Delay or uncertainty risks reduced scope, higher long-term costs, and the loss of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to complete recovery properly and fairly on the estate where the Grenfell tragedy occurred.

We call on the Government to:

  • Honour its post-Grenfell commitments
  • Provide the remaining £100 million, and
  • Ensure every home on the Lancaster West Estate is fully refurbished to a 21st-century standard.

For the estate where the Grenfell tragedy occurred, recovery must mean safe, high-quality homes for all residents - not just some.
