What a brilliant effort. Many thanks for signing the petition to save our recycling bins.
We are making an impact. We have been interviewed on Breeze Radio, there is an article in tomorrow’s Gazette. BBC Berkshire has covered the story a number of times. And the story is all over Facebook.
Sorry about the short notice; but we have been asked to present our petition to the full Council meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:30pm at the Deanes Building, Civic Offices, London Road, RG21 4AH. This gives us a chance to talk to all 60 Basingstoke Councillors and tell them what a terrible mistake they are making. It would be really helpful if as many of us a possible could be there. It should only take 20 minutes.
But the big question is what do we do next? A councillor has told me that petitions are great but the real way to make an impact on politicians is to send in letters and emails. So can we all send an email to our local councillor/MP.
We just need to say in an email that Basingstoke needs more recycling not less. We are one of the worse at recycling in the country. We should not be throwing perfectly good recyclable plastic into an incinerator. The answer is to reduce our use of plastic, then re-use what we have to buy and then recycle the rest.
Oh and let’s make it clear that the “no market” excuse does not wash. Hundreds of councils re-cycle mixed plastic; what the Council mean is that they can’t make enough money out of selling our waste!!
