The Issue
Michael Gravely, NDOC Inmate # 15968 has been incarcerated for over 4 decades in the Nevada Department of Corrections. 41+ years to be exact! He is serving a sentence of "life without the possibility of parole". Michael Gravely was 21 years old when he was arrested in 1982. We as American's must end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the U.S., challenging racial and economic injustice, disparities in sentencing, and protect the basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. Young black men! This story is not unique to Michael alone. Many men and women within Nevada's Department of Corrections were sentenced to life without parole before reaching the age when their cognitive development was fully completed - age 26.
Michael Gravely's case highlights the need for a reevaluation of sentencing practices, especially for those who have demonstrated rehabilitation and pose no threat to society. Michael has suffered multiple strokes and is almost totally immobile. 12.36 % of Nevada's incarcerated population are geriatric patients over the age of 55, who deserve to be treated with dignity.
We believe that after nearly four decades in incarceration, Mr. Gravely deserves the opportunity to rebuild his life and contribute positively to society. We kindly ask for your support by signing the attached petition advocating for the release of Michael.
In June, Michael turned 62 years of age, and we believe it is time to reassess the length and nature of his sentence. We are hopeful that you will join us in advocating for clemency, sending a powerful message about the need for compassion, rehabilitation, and fairness in our criminal justice system.
In light of these considerations, we are formally requesting a chance to be heard by the Nevada Pardons Board on behalf of Michael Gravely. Our specific request is for clemency, resulting in a commutation of his sentence to life "WITH" the possibility of parole. This change would make him eligible for immediate release, as a life sentence with the possibility of parole typically carries a term of 20 years.
