The Issue

Canada goose droppings are making Vancouver's waterfront parks and sports fields hard to use, and David Lam Park in Yaletown is one of the worst. Downtown kids have very few fields to play on, so when this one is fouled, families and teams lose one of the only places they have.

The Park Board already addles goose eggs and cleans up droppings, and we appreciate that work. But it isn't keeping the fields usable. We're asking the Park Board to run a goose management pilot at David Lam Park in 2027, then use what works at other affected parks and fields. Humane options that make fields less attractive to geese include:

  • Food-grade turf repellents like methyl anthranilate or anthraquinone, which other cities use on sports fields
  • Planting or low fencing along the False Creek shoreline, so geese can't walk straight from the water onto the grass
  • Visual deterrents, such as reflective pinwheels, moved regularly so the geese don't get used to them
  • A licensed goose dog program, like the ones some cities use on their fields
  • No-feeding signs near the fields

Canada geese are a protected species, and we're not asking for anything that would harm them. We just want Vancouver's kids to have clean, safe fields to play on.

Please sign if you'd like to see the Park Board start this pilot at David Lam Park in 2027.
