This is good news, if true.
Unfortunately, I don't have any verification of if, or when, this happened. As I reported here last week, Berkeley Group installed many new odour suppressant machines, which have made no difference at all to the stench we are living in.
I took my family away from Southall for the weekend to escape the fumes in this seemingly never ending heatwave. We returned late last night to lovely fresh, clean air, all night long. So it was tempting to believe that something had changed.
This morning, the stench returned about 8:30 am, half an hour after Berkeley Group started work on the soil 'hospital' within 500m of our home.
This would seem to confirm to me that Berkeley Group, can control the odour, but they choose not to because it would cost them time and money.
Which is contrary to what we have been told - that they can't control it (which in itself, is unbelievably worrying), that there will always be an odour, and that we just have to put up with it for the 'greater good'.
If it's true that Berkeley Group can't control the odour, then why should anyone believe them when they insist they can control the harmful benzene and asbestos contaminants in the soil they are supposedly cleaning?
If it's true that Berkeley Group can't control the odour, why would anyone believe them when they say the new homes they are building will be fit for human habitation, and not a cancer time bomb waiting to kill new buyers thirty or forty years down the line?
If it's true that Berkeley Group can't control the odour, why have we recently had so many odour-free nights, only to be forced to close all our windows again due to the stench soon after they start work in the morning?
If it's true that Berkeley Group can't control the odour, why would anyone believe them when they say they don't (and presumably haven't) operated at night, in breach of their operating permit?
We know that their great pals at FM Conway, who are on site providing tarmac for the new roads, lied to the press and the public about their operations.
FM Conway claimed that only water vapour was emitted from their chimney (in Get West London News), yet raised the chimney by 10m to better disperse odours (email from Hillingdon Environmental Protection Officer).
FM Conway also breached their legal permit for months using diesel fuel rather than natural gas, and only stopped because they got caught. This is according to our MP, Virendra Sharma, and the Leader of Ealing Council, Julian Bell. Yet FM Conway deny breaching their permit (in email to me).
FM Conway have been creating a stink of their own since 2014 (Get West London News), yet always deny it's them. They claim they are great people, doing great work, and are absolutely brilliant at controlling their foul smell. So much so, that they offered to help Berkeley Group control their toxic odour (in email to me).
If they have helped Berkeley, they haven't done a very good job!
FM Conway aren't Berkeley Group, of course, but their business ethics seem to me to be very similar.
