The old gas works site in Southall is being redeveloped by Berkeley Group. Before they can build new homes, they have to clean the soil contaminated with benzene and asbestos, among other nasties. They could have taken the soil off-site in lorries, but chose to keep it onsite in what they call a soil 'hospital' to save time and money. Unfortunately for people who live and work nearby in Southall Green and Southall Broadway, it's causing a massive still, day in, day out, not to mention the potential air pollution and health impacts. In the video, I note that Berkeley Group installed many new odour suppressant units since my previous visit the week before. Since then, the stink - a choking tarry, petrol like smell - has returned with a vengeance.
