The City of Cape Town has failed to deliver the weedharvester it has been promising for years. It was supposed to be delivered by June last year (2021), but the delivery date was postponed to December 2021. However late last year they pushed the delivery date back to June 2022.
When campaigners asked to visit the factory where the new machine was being constructed, they were told that Covid precautions prevented this. When they asked to see photos of the construction process, they were told that this would infringe copyright.
Then in early 2022, when asked how construction was progressing, the City confessed that no work had so far commenced on making the weed harvester, but that it was still on course for delivery in June 2022.
At the end of May the City finally confessed that no work had been done at all on the weed harvester, and that a tender would be put out for a new bid to build the machine.
This means that when summer and the algae arrives, there will be no weed harvester to mitigate the disaster.
Meanwhile the 50 year old weed harvester, which should long ago have been replaced, languishes in mechanical I.C.U. in a workshop somewhere, unable to perform.
