I was the only city resident in attendance - the council did not accept that beaver coexistence should be an agenda item for future discussion. They gave the floor to the city manager, Tony Tomasello, and then brushed their hands. They outright rejected the idea of making it an agenda for serious discussion.
No matter what stage of life, social status, you name it… I cannot think of a single person (myself included) who is eager to spend their evening at City Hall. You must wait at least an hour before you can speak. All the orders of business take place first and then public comments. Talking heads pontificating is not anyone’s idea of a good time. Still, if you want change, you have to come out and show support.
What get’s my goat is the deceit. Tony Tomasello lied on these points last night:
1) “We have always advocated no-kill” - he denies the city spent $200 per head on killing beavers
2) “This is the first time we experienced beavers” - It also happened in 2012, the year they killed 5 beavers, it is at least the second time and there has been years to prepare for a recurrence.
3) “We don’t have much land, coexistence is not an option” - Rockville does coexistence, are they that different? See Rockville’s coexistence solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNRRTKjpx94
4) “Why should we make a theme park for beavers?” - I didn’t say build a theme park. I said it already is, that’s why they came, that’s why they’ll return.
If there is to be change on this issue, or any issue, we need a minyan. Ten people need to show up, it cannot be one person standing. Please speak up if you are willing to spend a Monday night at city hall then it would be worth trying again. Thank you.
