The Waterloo Leisure Services Commission Board met this morning and heard public comment on the proposed park sales. Prairie Grove Park was well represented. There was also ample opposition presented from Sulentic, Castle Hill, and Audubon parks.
In light of the overwhelming public opposition Bob Bamsey motioned that the board recommend for the city council to leave the parks alone. Amazingly, there was not a second from the other board members and Bamsey's motion died without a vote being cast.
I spoke with the Mayor after the meeting and he suggested that we form neighborhood associations and assume ownership and management of the parks for ourselves. Am I the only one who sees this as a little bit ridiculous? Is this how other cities manage their parks?
The board will meet again in June. In the meantime we will continue to mount our opposition to these park sale proposals.
