Request for Investigation - Audit of Front Street Shelter's Records, Policy and Practices
The Issue
Recently, a large group of concerned citizens wrote to you about problems at Front Street Shelter, including the illegal killing of animals, not providing veterinary care to animals who need it, and killing animals for being fearful and stressed in the shelter. We share those concerns.
Front Street uses the idea that they try to save every animal to get community support and donations, but they do not try to save every animal that could be saved.
We request that you hire a qualified outside evaluator* to audit Front Street's records, policies, and practices and make recommendations about how to reach and maintain the goal of saving every healthy and treatable animal. We also request that you ensure recommendations are implemented and Front Street is accountable for performance improvements in lifesaving.
The animals and people of Sacramento need, want, and deserve a lifesaving shelter. The people of California want their capital city to be a positive model of lifesaving, not another example of government ineffectiveness and dishonesty. We want you to do your jobs as elected officials and make Front Street Shelter a lifesaving shelter that is transparent and accountable to the public.
*A qualified outside evaluator is one who has no relationship with Front Street and does have expertise and successful experience managing a shelter that saves over 90% of animals.
