What Polly means to me

I started this petition on Mother’s Day because Polly Farmer was my grandmother’s favourite player. A die-hard Geelong supporter she regaled me with tales of his feats and his humble humility. I was ten months old when Polly led that team to victory but I heard about it every season she was with us.

She also took me aside and explained that life wasn’t fair for all of us, but particularly for Aboriginal people, and that men like Polly helped people like us appreciate that “blakfellas” were just the same as any of us but sometimes had to be better just to be accepted. This was a valuable lesson.

Polly Farmer and many other sportspeople helped raise the standing of Aboriginal people at a time before they even counted - that’s why he was my grandmother’s favourite.
