Make the Pensacola Confederate Monument a Gulf Coast Artificial Reef
The Issue
The Confederate monument, “After Appomattox”, has been removed from downtown Pensacola. Regardless of which side of the argument you are on, the one thing we can all agree on is that we love our beaches. The Gulf of Mexico is naturally barren and artificial reefs are beneficial when events such as oil spills and hurricanes occur. These events cause habitat damage and destruction. Artificial reefs mitigate that damage by providing additional habitat for marine life. They also help marine life populations rebound. The statue would create life and make a great reef for snorkelers and scuba divers. Let’s turn this monument into something we can all be proud of.
