Ridesharing companies like Uber are playing a critical role in the everyday lives of people by increasing access to safe, affordable, reliable transportation. Drivers undergo a rigorous and
thorough background check, and the on-demand apps have built in a number of additional enhanced safety features that provide further safety benefits for passengers and drivers. Not only is ridesharing changing the way people are able to get around their community, but these new forms of transportation are improving public safety. Studies have shown the availability of services like Uber reduce alcohol-related driving arrests by up to 51% (Dills & Mulholland), reduce assault and disorderly conduct arrests by up to 42% (Dills & Mulholland), and reduce DWI deaths by more than 10% (UT Austin). The ability to get a safe ride at the touch of a button means making the smart choice is also the easy choice.

In summary, Uber can only be used by adults who intentionally request a ride from a smartphone, unlike hailing a curbside taxi. It should be safe to assume that a majority of adults with a smartphone are not ignorant of national headlines regarding Uber and are capable of accepting the risk, perceived or otherwise. There are between 6-8 million Uber rides taken per day across the globe. Riding with Uber is not inherently dangerous, therefore consenting adults should have the freedom to make the decision for themselves whether or not to use Uber.
