Petition updateAll signs should adhere to Canadian Code of Ad Standards

I can't believe we still have to protest this s#$@!

Pro-choice London, Ontario

Hi, Folks.

Yep! We're still here . . . . . one year later.

Here's what's been happening since our last update (the announcement of the Nov. 3, 2020 meeting of the CPSC (Community and Protective Services Committee). That petition was on the agenda and a motion was passed "That Civic Administration be directed to investigate options to address community concerns around graphic unsolicited flyer deliveries to residential properties including but not limited to; steps taken by other municipalities and potential amendments to the existing municipal nuisance by-law or an introduction of a new by-law, and report back with options for counsel’s consideration."

City Staff did indeed investigate options and came back to the CPSC on Sept. 21, 2021, with an utterly useless proposal for a by-law that would target all flyers in general with no penalty.

This proposal was rejected by City Councillors and a PPM has been called for November 2nd, 2021. https://london.ctvnews.ca/bylaw-to-stop-graphic-anti-abortion-flyers-criticized-for-having-no-teeth-1.5587179

What does this mean for YOU?

This means that you now have the ability to have your voice heard by City Councillors and the public.

I have heard from so many of you who experienced great harm and trauma from these flyers. It's time that City Hall know the extent of the negative impact that these flyers had on residents.

Here is what we already know.

We already know that Calgary, Winnipeg, Halifax and Ottawa have flyer by-laws in place. Research conducted by the ARCC (Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada) indicates that none of these four cities — Winnipeg, Ottawa, Calgary and Halifax — have had ANY lawsuits come forward in response to their by-laws. I think this is significant information, especially regarding Winnipeg, Calgary and Halifax, which have by-laws with penalties. Further, three of these by-laws have been in place for many years — Ottawa since 2003, Winnipeg since 2008 and Calgary since 2016 (Halifax since 2019).

How can you help?

Register to attend the PPM on Nov. 2, no later than Nov. 1. Email CPSC@london.ca to register your attendance.

- you may attend the meeting via Zoom or in-person
- speakers have 5 mins. maximum to express their thoughts

If you were impacted in a negative way by these harmful flyers, the City needs to hear from you. Tell them why a ban on these flyers is so important.

Ask that the City come back with a specific by-law that bans all graphic images of alleged aborted fetuses. AND, that the by-law contains a specific, measurable penalty.

Thank you!
