No mutilation of Flamingos at Miller Park Zoo Bloomington Illinois

The Issue

The City of Bloomington ’s by a vote of a majority of City Council aldermen made the choice to involve Our City in the barbaric procedure, which involves amputating the end of a baby bird’s wing at just a few days old will be occurring if the current designed Flamingo display at a Public Park which has on it's grounds the Miller Park Zoo is built and allowed to be the home of  20 - 25 mutilated Flamingos. (pinioned)

This City is not moving toward designs that focus on the quality of the life of the animals living in the exhibits by this Flamingo exhibit and other exhibit designs included in their Zoo Master Plan from 2012.

As the focus of other zoos move toward conservation --and the newly built exhibits more than ever closely approximate native habitats this design that is going to be built will make it a necessity for the cycle of mutilation to be continued by not making advances in exhibit design and expert opinions recommending full flight exhibits that would eliminate the mutilation for future generations of birds born in captivity.

The exhibit approved by the City Council to be built included the purchased of already mutilated (pinioned) Flamingo's. Those Flamingos before they were 10 days old had the amputation done taking away their nature ability to fly permanently.

The cycle of mutilation will continue if the exhibit is allowed to be built and home to mutilated (pinioned) flamingos without a change in the design or a change of a different animal species that will not need mutilation to be displayed.

This is not the quality of life they deserve.

We, the undersign seek to END this cycle of taking away an animals right to fly by stating "Not In Our Town"  will these these practices that are barbaric and cannot be tolerated any longer. That the justification was done for the design "well this is what other zoos continue to do" (zoo industry) is unacceptable for these birds of flight to live in Our Zoo in Our City Bloomington Illinois USA.

That the new exhibit not be built till it can be designed for full flight or a different animal species be put in the exhibit. That if built that it not be used to display any modified animal by mutilation (pinioning) or other barbaric methods.

That the City of Bloomington City Council adopts a no mutilation policy under The Home Rule powers that insure and  provide a quality of life for any animals that reside in the City of Bloomington as well as those captive in the Miller Park Zoo.
