City of Biloxi: Require City Council Meetings to be Broadcast Online

The Issue

The City of Biloxi, Mississippi, typically broadcasts City Council meetings to the public via YouTube, providing an important platform for transparency and civic engagement. However, there currently is no legal requirement for the City to do so. Recently, a Special City Council meeting was not broadcast online, leading to many questions from the public and renewed calls for greater transparency in local government.

For these reasons, and others, we support the proposed City ordinance below titled "Ordinance Establishing Internet-Based Broadcasting Requirements for City Council Meetings." This ordinance establishes requirements for internet-based broadcasting of all City Council meetings. This ordinance, if approved, would formalize the City’s commitment to transparency by making it a requirement to broadcast meetings live on internet-enabled platforms, ensuring that all residents can stay informed about key decisions and discussions that directly impact their community.

We, the undersigned, urge the Biloxi City Council to expeditiously add the ordinance to an upcoming City Council agenda and approve it.
