We support Tara Winer for City Council**

Over 4,000 residents asked City Council for a binding commitment to keep SBRC’s existing amenities.  Tara Winer was the only one who even tried to deliver it.

At the August 6, 2026 City Council meeting, Council voted to put on the November ballot a $400 million bond, funded by a property tax increase.  Tara alone attempted to amend the ballot language to protect SBRC’s existing amenities.  No other council member tried to amend the ballot language, nor did they voice any support for Tara’s original SBRC amendment.  As a result, Tara had to scale back the amendment to include only the non-specific words “lap pool” with no binding protection; and even then, no council member said a word in favor of even "lap pool" until after Tara pressed the Director of Parks & Rec to consent, even though Council alone (not staff) is vested with decision-making authority over ballot language. 

Tara fought for SBRC’s amenities while other council members just watched.  No other council member fought to include SBRC’s other amenities, like our double-court basketball gym, outdoor soccer field, tennis courts, or beach volleyball courts, or to specify a “6-lane, 25-yard” lap pool.  No other council member pushed for binding language for SBRC, even though the bond measure’s “such as” language doesn’t actually require bond money be used to fund SBRC at all — let alone a 6-lane lap pool or SBRC’s other amenities. 

Though the bond measure still doesn’t include a binding commitment to keep any of SBRC’s existing amenities (i.e., 6-lane lap pool, double-court basketball gym, etc.), we are grateful to Tara for securing even the non-binding “lap pool” language— and for being the only council member to stand up for the 4,000+ residents fighting for SBRC to keep its existing amenities.  

Thank you, Tara, for sticking your neck out for us!  Boulder needs more elected leaders who believe it is their job to represent their constituents!
