Our last update had the wrong link.  That one was for “open comment,” not the “public hearing” on the SBRC ballot language.  Here’s the correct link:

👉Sign up to speak @ 8/6 Public Hearing

Numbers matter.  Please sign up now.  There’s no limit on the total number of speakers — everyone who signs up gets to speak.  Even saying just one sentence is worthwhile.  If you can’t attend in person, you can sign up to speak virtually.  Signup closes on Wednesday at 2pm.

WHY THIS MATTERS:  The City just released revised ballot language — and it ignored every amenity protection we requested.  Council needs to hear directly from us, the voters.  Verbal assurances are not sufficient.  Tell them you will support the bond measure if Council adds binding language ensuring that any renovated or rebuilt SBRC will include SBRC’s existing features:

  • lap pool
  • basketball gym
  • outdoor soccer field
  • beach volleyball
  • disc golf
  • tennis courts

BACKGROUND:  On February 1, Council told us they couldn’t commit to preserving “each and every component of the existing [SBRC] facility” because there was no “source of the funding” at that time.  Council’s proposed $400 million ballot measure would provide this funding, but the draft ballot language fails to protect SBRC’s existing amenities from being eliminated in any renovated or replacement SBRC.

The threat to SBRC’s amenities is not just hypothetical.  Earlier this year, Parks & Rec paid an architecture firm to spec plans for a 70,000 sq ft “field house” (an indoor soccer warehouse) as one SBRC replacement option — no lap pool, no outdoor soccer field, no beach volleyball, no basketball gym, etc.

The only SBRC amenities we can count on keeping in any future SBRC are those that are explicitly protected with binding language in the ballot measure itself.  We need to let Council know that non-binding ballot language and verbal assurances will not get our votes.

WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW:

  1. Email Council today.  The ballot language must legally protect SBRC’s existing amenities in any future SBRC.
  2. Sign up to speak at the August 6 public hearing (1777 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80302) — in person or virtually.
  3. Can’t speak?  Attend the hearing to show your support
  4. Share this update with friends, neighbors, family, etc.
