Citizenship by Descent for All Descendants of St Kitts and Nevis
The Issue
St Kitts and Nevis is more than a place on a map. For generations of descendants around the world, it is our heritage, our identity, and the home of our families' stories.
Today, however, many descendants of Kittitians and Nevisians remain unable to claim citizenship in the country of their ancestors. While citizenship may be obtained through investment or marriage, those with genuine ancestral ties are often excluded from the same opportunity to formally belong to the nation their families helped build.
We welcome the Government's efforts to ensure citizenship by descent through constitutional reform. This is an important and positive step towards reconnecting St Kitts and Nevis with its global diaspora. However, the proposed amendment does not go far enough.
The current proposal limits eligibility in a way that excludes many descendants of Kittitian and Nevisian heritage. Citizenship by descent should recognise ancestry itself, not be restricted by the current nationality of descendants. A person's connection to St Kitts and Nevis is not determined by the passport they hold today, but by the family roots that connect them to the Federation.
We also believe that any pledge required of new citizens should reflect the reality of an independent St Kitts and Nevis. Rather than an oath of allegiance to a foreign monarch, it should be a pledge of commitment to the Constitution, sovereignty, democratic values, and people of St Kitts and Nevis.
Around the world, nations embrace their descendants as part of their extended national family. By recognising all eligible descendants, St Kitts and Nevis can strengthen its ties with future generations, encourage investment and engagement from its diaspora, preserve its rich cultural heritage, and reinforce a national identity built on belonging rather than circumstance.
This is an opportunity to create a modern, inclusive, and independent citizenship framework that reflects who we are as a nation and who we aspire to be.
We call on the Prime Minister and the Government of St Kitts and Nevis to:
- Restore citizenship by descent for the descendants of Kittitians and Nevisians.
- Ensure eligibility extends to all qualifying descendants, regardless of their current nationality.
- Replace the oath of allegiance to the King with a pledge that reflects the sovereignty and independence of St Kitts and Nevis.
- Strengthen the bond between the Federation and its global diaspora for generations to come.
If you believe that heritage, ancestry, and genuine connection should be recognised and respected, please sign this petition and help demonstrate the strength of support for a more inclusive and independent vision of citizenship in St Kitts and Nevis.
Together, we can honour our roots, embrace our global family, and help build a stronger future for St Kitts and Nevis.
