Today I'm declaring a victory for this petition. I'm not sure if this site will allow me to send out anymore updates once I do, so I wanted to inform you where we stand. I've been conflicted about either closing the petition, or declaring a victory (the only two options), and here's why:
In little over a month you, along with 200+ other people have signed this petition. In addition, a Dewey Brown Heritage Stamp has garnered the support of 3 US Senators, and a number of prominent golf organizations. With your support behind this campaign, I have forwarded all information to the Citizens' Stamp Committee for review. However, it will be some time before I/we know if they will select Dewey Brown for a Heritage Stamp, and another 3 years before an actual stamp if selected. That said, there is no longer a need for more signatures... thus a reason to close this petition.
However, recently I spoke with Tom Brawley, Senior Director of Membership at the PGA, and he has formally acknowledged that Dewey Brown was the first Black member of the PGA. He also said that he will be forwarding his findings so that their website, PGA.com, will reflect this in their history. This is a huge statement, and equally as important in honoring the achievements of Dewey Brown! Thus why I have decided to claim a victory with this campaign.
It was with your momentum that this was all possible. If I am able to, I will update you about the committees decision with the stamp. Thank you again for all your support.
Sincerely,
R. Malakhi Simmons
