Citizens Opposed To Development On Cumberland Island

Citizens Opposed To Development On Cumberland Island
The Issue
Cumberland Island is one of the last wild places found along the eastern seaboard. People come to the island to walk the windblown shores, to view nature in an almost pristine state, and to enjoy the quiet solitude of a barrier island that has put conservation at the forefront. There are 1,000 acres of fee simple land on Cumberland. Allowing the fee simple land to be rezoned for the expressed purpose of building houses would put much of this in jeopardy.
The City of St. Mary’s and Camden County benefit from tourism generated by having this national treasure on their doorstep. It would be a mistake to put it all at risk by opening the door to development on the island.
