Gillnet fishing is a method used where a net is put on the sea floor and as marine animals swim in, they are trapped there until the net is hoisted up. This method, although effective in capturing a large number of fish at once, poses a big threat to larger marine animals that are not the intended targets. Hawksbill turtles and vaquitas (porpoises) suffer most because they need to come up to the surface in order to breathe. When they are trapped in gillnets, they cannot breathe and eventually die. This has contributed to both animals becoming endangered and has put vaquitas on the brink of extinction with only 30 members left.
