Nearly 900 people have signed out petition: We're encouraged to see the huge coverage of the Government's snub of the Portishead Line recently! In the News: North Somerset Times: Portishead Railway Group, Vice-chairman Colin Howells said: “The funding from the DfT to complete the project, which we were led to believe was a real possibility, has been refused.”
“But this doesn’t mean that the project is dead, just that that particular source of funding is not available. “While this setback is hugely frustrating for everyone, including those who are working on the MetroWest project, it’s not the first time we’ve faced a setback, and so, the campaign and the project carries on.” Political leaders locally have spoken up in support of the Portishead railway. Cllr David Pasley, NS Council executive member for finance, said he "is confident Government cash will arrive from a different stream soon." Alison Crawford, chair of the North Somerset Liberal Democrats said in a statement: "We think this is unacceptable given the strain on the areas roads and the desire for a railway to be introduced." Crawford added: "We will continue campaigning for a rail link to Portishead and Pill and [this petition] will help to put pressure on the Conservative council and government to realise that it is vital to the regions infrastructure that we get a proper rail link."
