Chris Christie vetoed legislation which would ban the use of pig gestation crates in New Jersey.
A gestation crate is a 7 ft by 2 ft metal crate in which female pigs are placed. Farmers believe that this idea of cramming 200+ pound pigs into a small, confined area is a solution to cease fighting between one another. These poor animals are crammed to the point where they cannot even move one inch to either side of them and have open sores from constantly lying down. Farmers use these crates to confine pregnant females through the birthing cycle up until the time of labor. When labor begins, the pigs are taken to an equally small area, known as a farrowing crate. Once the pig gives birth, she is then sent back into a gestation crate to be impregnated once more. At this time, her piglets are set to face their own destinies at the age of only ten days. This malicious cycle will last until the pig is physically unable to give birth any longer. At this point, the now infertile pig is sent to the slaughterhouse where she will only suffer more.
