Children and adults with disabilities in Colorado benefit from receiving ABA therapy.  The goal of ABA therapy is to increase independence and teach self-advocacy skills.   In Colorado, 1 in 31 children are diagnosed with Autism, and 1 in 6 are diagnosed with intellectual disabilities.  Many families have already been on a waitlist or are unable to access services.  

Currently, more than a dozen providers have had to close, and many more don't know if they can sustain the year.  Providers have warned state lawmakers, agencies, and boards about this impending crisis over the past five years.  We have finally reached the tipping point.  

Reimbursement rates for ABA therapy are 60% lower than for mental health providers.  ABA is lower than speech and occupational therapy by more than 75%.  ABA therapy is a specialty that requires a high level of training and education to provide.  Without services, many families must rely on institutions to ensure the safety and care of their children. Others must forgo therapy all together.  The longer the waitlist for services, the less likely these children will gain maximum benefit from therapy.  

Lawmakers must act NOW!  ABA in Colorado needs immediate action if providers are to be able to continue services into 2024.

1. We need an emergency Medicaid rate of 40%.  This aligns with what other states have done this year and ensures companies can compete in the job market. 
2. We need regulations requiring sustainable rates with annual reviews to reflect the ever-changing cost of operations and living.
3. Assessment code reform in alignment with generally accepted standards of care as outlined by the AMA and CPT codes.
4. We need access to all 13 billing codes. 
5. We need Prior Authorization reform. 

Unfortunately, without immediate action, many providers will need to close their doors or move out of the state.  This can't continue; children and families need services today.
