Child custody and visitation rights for unmarried fathers in Saint Lucia

Child custody and visitation rights for unmarried fathers in Saint Lucia
The Issue
Thank you for stopping on this page. We don’t know what else to do, which is why we have come here. Social media has moved mountains for people and changed circumstances that were deemed impossible. My husband has a daughter in Saint Lucia, he was a young father at the age of 20. It has been a long and emotionally draining battle, no matter what route he took. All odds are against him. This petition is so the government sees the people want change. Tthey need to update this law! There are men out there who want to be present in their child’s life and give them all the love and support they need. Because my husband was not married to the mother of his child, she has 100% custody and can give her to whomever she deems fit to care for her. She can legally conceal her from him and his family unless social services or a lawyer gets involved. The child doesn’t live with her mother. She lives with her grandmother. In a meeting with social services in 2019. The child’s mother renounced her claim and stated she wanted nothing to do with her daughter or my husband. The grandmother is raising my husbands daughter and the girls mother rarely sees her. She has started a new life, and is with a man who has denied my husbands daughter to live at his home. She has abandoned her first born child. The grandmother has kept her from my husbands mother and his relatives who live in Saint Lucia for over 3 years now. They purposely keep her from them and their own family because she is a talker and not afraid to express herself.
My husband had not spoken to or even seen a picture of his daughter since 2019. We had to take them to social services in order to be able to see the child on our trip as they threatened him if he went to their house. My husband wanted to be put on child support by the court, after catching them out in a lie when money for the child was used for their lifestyle and personal items, so he had rights to see his child. The mother and grandmother both refused this. Child support in Saint Lucia is $72 USD a month! He used to send 5 times that amount with their demands, claiming she was sick and needed medication, he would send all of his scholarship money every month and not have anything left to feed himself. He would send $300 and they’d demand another $400. When he was unable they would prevent him from speaking to his daughter. Say she’s sleeping or isn’t at home or they don’t have internet. Every time he built a relationship with her they tried to break it. The grandmother has gone so far as to say the girl is not my husbands biological daughter. This child is undergoing psychological abuse at the hands of her grandmother and her mother is allowing it. She is nowhere to be found in any decision making. When the authorities have gotten involved their story is that they don’t allow access because the child will be confused and she doesn’t know who my husband or her grandmother are. When they are reunited, this little girl runs to them and hugs them so tight! We have videos and photos of her with my husband and mother in law. She asks them why she hasn’t seen them? Declares that she loves them. Asks them for a sleep over, if she can live with them or if they’d take her away for a long weekend. Family members of the child’s mother who have been around the girl say that she cries for BOTH of her parents every day. My husband has been blackmailed for money from the girl’s grandmother, to see or speak to his daughter. After speaking with 4 lawyers we have hired help and they are in hiding. They do not return phone calls or emails. No one can find them.
The child is now 8 years old. This has been going on since she was 2. It is time for this to be changed. Protect the children who cannot speak or defend themselves. As a government, it is their duty to safeguard their young people. For their minds will mould their countries future.
Update: Just recently she was hospitalized, we had absolutely no idea. My MIL(mother in law) received an anonymous phone call telling her. She rushed to the hospital to see her. The child jumped out of her bed and hugged her! She was so happy to see her. She told my MIL she wanted to come and live with her! Asked her if she had a spare room to stay in at her home. She wanted to leave with my MIL after she gets discharged from the hospital. The grandmother who is raising her asked my MIL who told her she was in hospital. Not once did she apologize for not telling her or my husband. she wanted to know why she was there! This woman has everyone’s number. During my MIL and the grandmas conversation the child confronted her “don’t I ask you for my daddy every day?” “Why didn’t you call him and tell him I am sick?” I want my daddy but you never let me see or talk to him.” The grandma changed the topic and proceeded to ask the child if she has ever “harmed her”. Thank God there were witnesses who weren’t family. Yesterday My MIL went back to the hospital after work to see the little girl but she was discharged earlier in the day. The grandma didn’t let her know. This sneaky behavior is well known and a regular occurrence! Please help us get joint custody so we can see her. It is not our intention to rip her away, this little girl is surrounded by soooo much love and is being denied access by her grandma. THIS IS CHILD ABUSE!
