The stretch of Warden Ave where Violet was hit while crossing at a flashing crosswalk is being considered for a speed reduction down to 40km/h on April 4th by Scarborough Community Council. The speed reduction is necessary, but I do not think this alone will prevent hurried drivers from zooming through the flashing crosswalk. Again this morning while lights were flashing with three of us standing at the curb, a car went through instead of stopping. A crossing guard, red light or stop sign are also needed to protect the 95 kids that cross Warden to get to Birch Cliff Public School. And this number does not include all of the preschoolers who need to cross Warden Ave to get to Scarborough Day Centre!
In the 24 hour period the traffic study was conducted, 161 cars were clocked going over 60km/h where Violet was hit, 963 going between 51 and 60km/h, 2489 were going over 40km/h. 19% (1124/5812) of cars that passed through that day were driving over 50km/h. Considering the fatality rate is estimated at 80% for pedestrians struck by a vehicle travelling 64km/h (40mph) and 40% at 48km/h (30mph), 1124 cars in a single day is terrifying!
We need the speed reduced to 40km/h AND a crossing guard when our kids are travelling to and from school!
