There are good developments, please go through video of Headon - direct encounter with Taxi Union Goonda, well compered by Pramod Acharya, the kind of journalism Goa needs. It clearly exposes the "Chors" of taxi business who are misguiding taxi drivers. Raghu has clearly stated that the driver can earn over Rs2500 a day without going out of the city. But the "Chor" mentality cannot understand it and also that there are overall benefits for public and tourism. And then "Chors" keep complaining that Taxi drivers dont get business. No wonder "Chors" bought expensive cars by looting Tourists and Public and another "Chor" with same mentality who owns taxi fleets and is living happily in London and comments on facebook.
For the general public it's increasingly difficult to earn but for the "Chor" mentality there are no poor people in Panaji, can easily pay Rs500 for short distance and everyone owns a car. And then "Chor" mentality always uses argument that five star hotel charges are 5 times, but Goans are not tourists. Actually for the tourists, hotels are prepaid and accepted before they come but they have certain expectations about taxi rates based on other states, and if you charge five times then Tourists will never come back and give a bad feedback in forums permanently denting image of Goa.
It is well known that the MLA's, Minsters, Govt Officers and Police either own Taxi licenses or benefit indirectly from the looting of the taxi license raj, so they will support Taxi Meters but that is not the solution for a Tourism based State like Goa. The Taxi Union has already threatened with strike on 22nd December as per the news item below and as we have always mentioned, the government will ALWAYS be at the mercy of Taxi union strikes. It's already happened before number of times and the only LONG TERM solution is to open for competition from TAXIGO/Ola/Uber/Meeru/Mega.
Appreciate Raghu's efforts but lets not be fooled about government asking to install Digital Taxi Meters. This is NOT THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY. We need app based services which TAXIGO is yet to introduce and we can allow for some time since its Goan. With this service you can select the NEAREST taxi on mobile screen and take a decision without talking to anybody on phone.
TAXIGO is Goan owned and everyone must fully understand that the first step was acceptance given the risk that this venture carries. Now that TAXIGO is fully accepted, the public must support TAXIGO so with increased number of taxis they can make them app based. With time more taxi drivers will join TAXIGO. The taxi drivers should dump the old (looting) taxi model to make a better living, as well as help the society at large. Depending on supply/demand after a certain date TAXIGO could hopefully open up for others who are not taxi drivers like Ola/Uber with the needed regulations.
As people get into the habit of using taxis, we hope TAXIGO will be able to support the market demands. As Raghu rightly states it will be impossible for Ola to operate based competition and for this to happen we all must support increasing TAXIGO business so the more areas can be covered and competition is mainly based on price. Ultimately we must get people to move away from owning cars. Raghu has stated he is fully open to other private players.
This is the week of crucial decisions as GTDC Chairman Nilesh Cabral and MD Nikhil Desai have met with CM Manohar Parrikar last week.
Citizens for Change has also requested a meeting with Manohar Parrikar and hopefully we will get a response.
