1. The “Not Our Mascot” group has worked very hard to create a comprehensive binder to deliver to the principal, superintendent and members of the board of education. It includes research on the psychological and sociological effects of Native-based mascots, letters of support from Tribal Nations and Indigenous organizations from all over the country, comments from this petition as well as a call to action that outlines the changes that we are demanding. Here is a link to the CMHS Mascot Binder 2020.
2. There will be an online school board meeting TOMORROW at 5:30 (MST). Indigenous people, alumni, former faculty and current students will be speaking and we need as many voices in the audience as possible. There will be a public comment period of the meeting and I encourage as many people as possible to speak. A simple “I do not support this mascot and the harm it perpetuates on Indigenous people and this community. I agree with the proposed changes.” would be enough. If you do not feel comfortable speaking, I still highly encourage you to attend. It would be incredibly powerful to have a lot of people show up for this meeting, board members and news outlets will take notice. Although we are not on the official agenda, they know that we are coming and we will keep coming back until they listen! Here’s the link to the Board of Education Meeting.
