This is a preliminary update of CDOT's The Plaza bike lane study. The CDOT full report is still going through the final review and approvals. However, CDOT was nice enough to share some of the key stats early. The study was a SUCCESS. It met it's objective - the bike lane calmed traffic significantly! Motorist speeds were reduced while traffic volume remained consistent. Speeds were reduced by 8 mph, from 45-46 to 37-38 mph - much closer to the posted speed limit. Other results show that the surrounding streets had very little impact; traffic volume and speeds did not significantly increase. All this was accomplished without any increase in traffic congestion. One lane did the job as good as 2 lanes but much safer!!!!! In addition, over 800 people responded to the CDOT survey. Results show that an overwhelming 49% of the respondents were extremely satisfied and 14% somewhat satisfied with the lane reduction. By mode, 89% of people who biked, 70% of people who walked and 61% of people who drove were all at least somewhat satisfied. See attached chart of additional survey summary results. Next steps include: 1) Obtaining the approved detailed report with statistics. 2) Meeting with City Council and CDOT to discuss next steps. If this study follows the methodology of a similar study (nearby Parkwood), a neighborhood walking survey and open design idea session would be conducted. The ultimate goal is to convince CDOT to include The Plaza with the recently funded Parkwood initiative. This would connect the Plaza Midwood and Belmont neighborhoods giving pedestrians and bicyclists a safe path all the way to the Greenway and the Blue Line light rail. This would be a huge step for Plaza Midwood and Belmont and for the City of Charlotte. If we get this accomplished, it would set the precedent for other neighborhoods around the city. Ultimately Charlotte would become a pedestrian city like Portland, Seattle, NYC, and abroad (Netherlands) etc. It is good for our safety and good for our growing city.
