On September 10, 2025 Charles (Charlie) Kirk was assassinated in the Utah Valley University Courtyard, surrounded by thousands of people, including fans, rivals, friends and family. Charlie was an American patriot, who devoted his life to the principles of faith, family and freedom, the same upon which our nation was founded nearly 250 years ago.

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the right to free speech and the freedom of the press. These rights are foundational for a functioning republic, and without them human flourishing and prosperity are immensely limited.

Charlie was perhaps the single most active participant in our sacred right to freedom of expression at public universities, like the Utah Valley University. During a time when American universities wavered in their resolve for freedom of speech, and a plurality of university students were fearful to voice dissenting political options, Charlie peacefully initiated discussions, conversations and debates that covered the entire spectrum of modern politics. Charlie valiantly entered college campuses amid threats of violence, petitions against him, heckling, jeering and opposing protests to engage in civil dialogue with university students of all persuasions, ideas and leanings. He gave millions of university students the courage to practice their God-given right to free expression, taught the critical thinking skills necessary to address nuanced social and political issues, and educated a generation on how to articulate complicated and sensitive ideas with clarity and respect.

In the courtyard at Utah Valley University, Charlie gave his final address and engaged in his final debates. He gave his final expressions of love for his country, his fellow Americans, the students of our university, his faith and his family. He bore his final witness of Jesus Christ, whose teachings and example he had modeled his own life after. He was subsequently killed in cold blood, as a public spectacle, to suppress the American morals and values he tirelessly spread until his dying breath. In this moment that spot became a sacred site of martyrdom, hallowed by the innocent blood of a true patriot, a husband, a father, a friend and a worthy Christian, whose conviction and courage can never be killed.

Charlie embodied the ideals of this nation and witnessed that they emanate from the same Creator who made us a free nation in the first place. He was a champion of free speech, peaceful assembly and civil discourse, especially among young Americans and our universities. His legacy will be one of peace, courage, discussion, faith, family and freedom.

We humbly petition the pertinent authorities of Utah Valley University, Orem City and the state of Utah to name the courtyard at Utah Valley University's campus in Charlie Kirk’s honor and erect a memorial on the site to his memory. We request that his family be notified and involved to ensure we properly enshrine his memory with care and dignity. As a Utah Valley University graduate, Orem City resident and a Utah tax payer, I feel it my right to voice my desire, along with thousands of others who agree with the proposal.  Our prayer is that this site, which has already been hallowed, can be remembered as a place where free expression, civil discourse and peaceful debate will always be the mechanisms to discuss disagreements in civil life and higher education. We trust our fellow alumni, staff, faculty and public to maintain the dignity and reverence they have always shown for our campus.

We pray for Erika Kirk, her children and the rest of the Kirk family in the wake of this heinous crime. We pray for our nation to be healed from the violence and division we have brought upon ourselves. We pray that God may bless us our redoubled efforts to establish a more perfect union.
