I am personally affected by the actions of Hamas, a group that has been committed to armed resistance against Israel and the creation of an Islamic Palestinian state in Israel's place. Since 2007, they have been governing in the Gaza Strip after taking over from the Palestinian Authority. It is time we address their actions on Oct. 7, 2023 when they attacked Israeli citizens and others from various countries.

This attack is not an isolated incident but part of a larger pattern of violence and disregard for human life that constitutes crimes against humanity under international law. The International Criminal Court defines crimes against humanity as acts "committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population." This definition fits perfectly with what happened on Oct. 7th and many other instances where innocent civilians were targeted. Hamas has also surrounded its armed forces behind, under, and amid innocent Palestinian Citizens, building tunnels, ammunition depots, and other military installations amongst the citizens of Palestine.

We must hold those responsible accountable for their actions to prevent further harm to innocent people and uphold international law standards. By charging Hamas leadership with crimes against humanity, we can send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
