Chapman Needs To Hold Students/Orgs Partying Accountable!!
The Issue
Chapman University is known for its sunny weather and cheerful campus. However, this establishment is also mired in controversy. This is an institution that is familiar with racism, bigotry, and sweeping issues under the rug.
"Wear masks, social distance, and avoid large gatherings of over 12." The Chapman administration loves to remind us about these conduct codes, yet it is evident that not all of the students that violate Student Conduct Code receive any disciplinary action. The vague threat of disciplinary action is simply not enough to stop the reckless students that continue to host/attend parties in Orange, CA and the surrounding areas.
Today, 2/23/2021, it was reported that Orange County has 250 new cases. Thankfully, though there were 0 deaths reported today, there were 28 deaths yesterday. The irresponsible actions of Chapman students who are carelessly partying put the residents & students living in Orange County at increased risk of contracting COVID-19. It has been almost one year since the pandemic began and we are wondering why these students feel comfortable enough to throw these parties.
Other universities such as Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and NYU have issued suspensions to, fined, and sent home students who refuse to follow COVID-19 rules. Just recently, on 2/9/21, UMass at Amherst had to shut down campus and the 350+ students responsible for the COVID outbreak face suspension, removal from campus housing, probation, or being formally reprimanded.
This petition is calling for Chapman University and its administration to make changes in order to hold these students accountable for their reckless actions. If the institution wants to reopen its campus in a month, then all students need to be taking extreme safety precautions. However, these students have shown that they do not care to comply with public safety measures and are willing to put others at risk for their own enjoyment. It would be irresponsible for Chapman to open the campus up with these gatherings continuously taking place, putting students and faculty at a greater risk.
It should not be the student’s responsibility to police other students. The university needs to take on a stricter stance and harsher disciplinary actions towards students who are not complying with COVID-19 safety protocols. With Instagram accounts like @chapmansuperspreaders & @chapman.party, it is easier to identify students attending these events, but Chapman needs to take real action.
