End Racist Behavior at Chapman University

End Racist Behavior at Chapman University
The Issue
We are calling for Chapman University to take action against Ahmed Younis. Younis is a professor of the class "Introduction to Human Rights" at Chapman who has used multiple slurs during class, making students uncomfortable. When a complaint was filed, Chapman said they would 'look into it' and "investigate". After a meeting with the student, they still have not done anything. Racism at the university is NOT NEW! This petition is not only to have consequences for Younis, but for all faculty and student exhibiting racist behavior.
This was the complaint filed by first-year student Aissata Sall:
Hello,
I would like to file a complaint about an experience that recently happened in my intro to human rights class. In the class, the professor used the n-word and the f slur in class. This is not the first time the n-word was said by him in class, but I wasn't there the first time and didn't feel it was my place to pass out a complaint. I was in class listening to the professor when he used both the n-word (with hard r) and the f slur and towards the end of the class when he asked if there were any questions, comments, or concerns I unmuted myself and proceeded to make my complaint. I told him that he had used those two slurs and it made me very uncomfortable and he responded by saying he was sorry if he made me feel uncomfortable and that next time, he might use some trigger warning to which I responded that he just shouldn't have said them at all. At this point, he responded to me that he disagrees and that maybe if I had had my camera on, he could gauge how I was feeling, and to that I was silent. I feel very uncomfortable showing up to a class where the professor uses slurs to have effective teaching, if you need to use slurs to teach effectively, your teaching isn't very effective or inspiring. Him using those words felt like a punch to my stomach, there is a history to those slurs and I don't think he adequately took that into consideration before using them.
