Change Williamstown Independent School's Mascot

The Issue

Williamstown Independent School's Mascot is the Demons, and it needs to be changed to better serve the interest of its students and staff.

It is not uncommon to hear the student body referred to as “The Demons”.

What is commonly known as the Student of the Month, in most schools, is now referred to as the "Demon of the Month," at Williamstown.

What is a demon?

De·mon: (NOUN) an evil spirit or devil, especially one thought to possess a person or act as a tormentor in hell.

The term 'Demons' is heavily used and encouraged in Satanism, and is at odds with Christianity, and many other world religions.

It is unlawful to infringe upon a student's 1st Amendment Right to the Freedom of Religion, by labelling them a spiritual term, that is specific to one religion over another.

Calling students such a derogatory term, such as “Demons,” is destructive to their mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and physical state.

If we want students to reach their full potential, both in the classroom, and out, it starts with the way they perceive themselves.

A child’s self-esteem is developed primarily between the ages of 1 and 8.

Studies say the most important factor that effects a child's self-esteem is often built from what parents and others say to the child.

In science, through studying plants, we have found that speaking kindly to plants promotes growth. If positive words promote growth in plants, how much more will they do for students?

We should be speaking positive words to students, to encourage their growth, academically, physically, socially and emotionally, to help them succeed later in life.

I hereby motion to have the school's mascot changed to something that is unbiased to religion and is both encouraging and uplifting to the child's self-esteem.
